Macau – The World’s Gambling Capital

Friday 10 April, 2015

The centre of the world’s gambling industry isn’t Las Vegas or Monte Carlo, but Macau – a tiny Special Administrative Region of China, and the only place in the People’s Republic where gambling in casinos is legal. After ten years of unparalleled growth, the region now faces both an economic downturn and an anti-corruption crackdown from the mainland. Presenter Claire Bolderson and producer Nick Minter visited this fascinating location on behalf of Radio 4 and the World Service, prompting director Shane Wall to accompany them, on the grounds that, “[he would] just really like to go”. He’d like to make it clear that he paid for his own ticket, even if he did end up recording over 30 hours of background ambience just in case.

Macau: Monte Carlo of the Orient is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Friday 24 April 2015.
